God is laughing at you

Big idea: Why “God” is laughing at you

We all have this character quirk that makes us want to control everything.

Most of our life’s spent fighting against the flow, rather than going with it.

Clinging to things that make us feel in control, or avoiding things that don’t.

This recently humbled me in a big way.

Here’s the easiest way to summarize it:

“You make plans and god laughs.”

Life doesn’t go our way, although we can influence where it goes.

I kept thinking I had control of when things would happen, or when my dreams would come to fruition.

I didn’t, and I still don’t.

So what are we to do?

Do we fly by the seat of our pants? No.

Give up on our goals and dreams? Nope.

Go into victim mode? Hell nah.

So you can avoid my mistakes, let’s explore what I’ve learned.

Short lesson: Working with (not against) “God” to get what we want

Here’s an interesting take:

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” – Benjamin Franklin

You: “But wait… didn’t you tell me that if I make plans God will laugh at me?”

Me: “Yep. It’s a paradox isn’t it?”

Like a cruise ship without a course planned, we will get lost at sea…

But a skilled sailor knows that even with a course planned a smooth sea isn’t guaranteed.

“A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.”

Life, like the sea isn’t predictable.

  • Storms can come along. (We experience delays.)
  • Ships sink. (We fall short.)
  • Winds blow. (We get off course.)
  • Pirates lurk in the water. (We don’t see problems ahead of time.)

So the real question is, do you want to become a skilled sailor?

That’s what our higher power, whatever you believe that is, wants for us.

To become skilled at navigating life’s terrain.

We don’t become skilled unless we:

  • Become lost at sea.
  • Experience storms.
  • Have a ship or two sink.
  • Get knocked off course by the wind.
  • Run into a few pirates.

Plus it makes for a good story, and a sweeter reward when we finally do make it to our destination… unless somewhere along the way we find a cool island and decide to change our course.

The real lesson here is this.

We can’t become attached to the plan (how it happens), or timeline (when it happens).

Remember this, life isn’t linear.

Things don’t happen in an A to Z fashion.

It’s more like A to G, back to B, then to Q, etc.

If we stay persistent, dedicated, and act with faith we can make it to Z… but it will take longer and be harder than we ever imagined.

Side note – this doesn’t apply to a goal like losing weight, or gaining weight for example since achieving them are very black and white. Input = output, calories in or calories out, etc.

Otherwise this is how it goes for 90% of our goals and dreams.

If you are interested, here is a short 1.5 minute clip I made around this topic to summarize:

Conversations with my higher self.

In the next section I will teach you about persistence, and then give you our quick takeaway for this week.

Deep quote: Without this thing you will fail every time

“Persistence is nothing more than Concentrated Effort mixed with Determination and Faith.”
— Napoleon Hill

Faith put simply, and non “religiously” is trust and belief combined.

So by combining these ingredients:

  • concentrated effort (action)
  • determination (not giving up)
  • faith (trust and belief in oneself, a higher power, and the possibility of achieving what you pursue)

We can’t fail… unless we quit along the way.

So how do we put all this together? Read below for a simple step by step guide.

Quick takeaway: How to make plans “God” doesn’t laugh at

Remember that our life is being co-created by us, and the universal source that is inside each of us.

Our goal is to work with, and not against that source.

So, here is how you can take action on what we covered today.

Step one: Get clear on what you want. This will help you to know what you are working towards.

  • Outline your vision (goal or dream).
  • Be specific, and don’t hold back.
  • Get clear on why you want the outcome, and what it would look like to get it.

Step two: Do your best to map out your course. This will help to guide your actions

  • Outline your best guess for an action plan. What inputs would create the output you want? How do you think you could make it happen?
  • Set an intention for when you’d like to make it happen. What timeline do you want to make this happen?
  • Identify the most important actions, routines, or habits that would give you the best chance of succeeding.

Step three: Commit to controlling what you can control. This will empower you to do what you can do, and let go of the rest.

  • Learn how other people accomplished what you want to. Ask others for help.
  • Follow your intuition. Check in with your higher power for support and guidance.
  • Put time in your calendar for your plan. Build the habits. Take the actions. Follow the routines.

And lastly, like the skilled sailor: adjust your course as you set sail, and learn to love the sea.
