This Week’s Activation…
Winning the mind game, and finding my fire again
Read time: 5 minutes
The mind game we all play, but most lose
I had a conversation last week that has been on my mind.
Aubree (my girlfriend), and I were talking about resources:
“It’s crazy because I know that right now I have everything I need to be even further ahead… so the question is why am I not? Without these mental blocks, and mind games we play with ourselves – we could do anything.” – Me
“Yeah but isn’t that the point of “playing the game” in the first place? To overcome them, so you can do the things you want to do and grow along the way?” – Aubree
“Haha, damn. I guess your right. That’s why self mastery, business, and life in general is fun. It wouldn’t be if we had it easy, or figured everything out.” – Me
The point is this:
It never ends.
No matter how far you go, what you’ve overcome, or what you accomplish along the way…
…you still have to show up tomorrow.
There is no finish line – it is a constant internal effort to make progress, improve, and most importantly not go backwards.
A mind game we play with ourselves.
Unfortunately most people lose this game – they don’t realize that even if they don’t actively participate, they are still playing the game.
We don’t have a choice…
…by being alive, we by default are on the path of self mastery – or self destruction.
There are no time outs, half times, or off seasons.
It’s a 24/7 and 365 game – so the question is, are you winning or losing?
Winning or losing the mind game
I already mentioned there isn’t a finish line to this game… which means you can’t win by finishing the game.
The game is only over when your life is.
What is winning then?
Progress.
Knowing that you got a little further today than you were yesterday.
Not externally, but internally.
Did you grow? Improve? Learn?
Then you are winning.
But if you went backwards – you are in the danger zone, and beginning to lose.
Napoleon Hill the author of Outwitting The Devil calls this Drifting.
Drifting is when we slowly begin to let bad habits, thoughts, and influences pull us down.
- That addiction you’ve been feeding in the shadow? Drifting.
- Your habit of scrolling instead of getting good sleep? Drifting.
- Avoiding the actions that move you forward out of fear? Drifting.
When we begin to drift in one area, we begin to drift in all areas.
For example – it might start as breaking the diet you’ve been following.
“One cookie isn’t going to hurt, is it?”
No, one cookie won’t. But now that you’ve eaten that cookie, you may as well have another.
And since you are already eating cookies, watching a little TV before your early bedtime won’t hurt.
But now that you are up past your bedtime, why not have a little snack before bed?
Snoozed your alarm? May as well miss the workout.
Brain fogged from the food you ate yesterday? No big deal, your projects can wait.
Stressed because you had a rough day? Why not have another cookie.
Before long, you’ve created a chain reaction that derails you across the board.
Do you see how this can get out of hand?
If you are going backwards, you are losing.
If you are moving forwards, you are winning.
Success is never about a finish line, reward, or outcome…
…it’s the process of making progress along the way.
Results, rewards, and recognition only comes later – and it is temporary.
Earl Nightingale summarized the definition of success perfectly:
“
Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.
— Earl Nightingale
How to win the mind game
First you must decide to play to win.
Either way, you are playing – and the chaos you create from not playing to win will hurt, a lot.
So, you may as well commit to playing.
Self-Mastery isn’t for the weak – it’s a good thing you are strong.
If we aren’t progressing, and improving…
…we are drifting, and going backwards.
There is no such thing as staying the same.
Change is the only constant, you are either growing or you are slowly dying.
Step One: Take inventory of where you are drifting.
- What areas am I avoiding in my life?
- What habits do I have that aren’t serving me?
- How is my mindset most of the time? Positive, or negative?
- How do I look at myself? Do I have confidence and self respect? Do I doubt myself?
- Where in my life am I being complacent?
You’ll see clearly where you have been drifting – or letting yourself slack.
Step Two: Stop drifting, and start making progress – no matter how small.
Napoleon Hill said:
“
The starting point of all achievement is desire.
— Napoleon Hill
Achievement = the process or fact of achieving something.
The process of achieving something is making progress – which is the opposite of drifting.
To stop drifting, and start making progress you need a burning desire…
…a clear vision of what you want.
Otherwise what is the point of your effort?
Why would you improve if you have no reason to improve?
You won’t – and by having a burning desire you have a clear purpose to drive you.
Simply set at least one goal that lights you on fire.
Assuming you couldn’t fail:
- How much money do you want to earn this year?
- What kind of physical shape do you want to be in?
- Where do you want to travel to?
Those are only a few examples – to get a full goal setting guide for free click here.
Once you are clear on at least one thing you want – you’ll need to create a plan.
Step Three: Create a plan.
It doesn’t need to be perfect. Making a plan shows yourself you are serious, and puts your brain to work on bringing this desire to life.
Ask yourself – “What are the 3 actions, or habits I need to commit to in order to bring this goal to life?”
Step Four: Take action.
Take the smallest next step towards your burning desire and goal.
Each time you do you are practicing becoming a new version of yourself…
…which is the real game.
Identity shift → Actions shift → Results shift
When who you see yourself as improves….
…your ability to take action improves, and ultimately your results improve.
Play the mind game to win.
“
If you have no major purpose, you are drifting toward certain failure.
— Napoleon Hill
Finding my fire again
I’ve learned something funny about slowing down.
Either we take time each day to slow down, and give ourselves a break…
…or our mind and body force us to eventually.
Last week was one of those times for me.
I had the least productive week I’ve had in a long time.
Since December I have been exhausting myself, and out of harmony.
Good sleep isn’t enough – I’ve learned there needs to be time daily to do nothing.
No agenda, no pressure, no expectations.
Now that I had a second to rest – I feel ready to get back to it, but in a more holistic and healthy way this go around lol.
✅ My Win: Small wins today make for big results tomorrow.
Right now I’m focused on checking boxes and moving the needle with 3-5 key tasks each day.
It feels great!
❌ My Challenge: Snooze you lose.
After our retreat in California I still haven’t adopted my timezone.
Central time is 2 hours ahead of Pacific time…
…so I’ve been sleeping and working 2 hours behind my time, which leads to chaos in the schedule.
But, now I’m back on my early morning flow again.
What I am working on
In my personal life: Swapping out discipline for devotion.
One of my mentors Attila shared powerful wisdom with me:
“Let go of discipline. It is about force, and pressure. Instead, adopt devotion. It is about showing up consistently and constantly with discipline, but out of love and from the heart… not pressure, but passion.”
This shifted my mindset, and I will continue to practice it moving forwards.
In my professional life: Re-strategizing and re-committing.
I’ve shown up consistently, and got going.
But now, it’s time to get good.
Afraid? Do it anyway.
Tired? Do it anyway.
Winning? Do it anyway.
Losing? Do it anyway.
That’s my motto right now, do it anyway.
Show up, show up, and then show up some more.
In my financial life: If it makes dollars, it makes sense (mostly).
In my business, and in my financial decisions I am 100% focused on creating more abundance.
The more money I make, the more people I can help, and the faster I can make progress.
Money isn’t everything – In fact after seeing some people I looked up to get caught doing shady things… more than ever I realize money isn’t everything.
But it is necessary, especially to help as many people as possible.
To improve my finances I’ve done a few things:
- Stopped using credit cards or loans.
- Negotiated interest rates to under 10% on everything (even 0% on some).
- Saving and paying off debt with 50% of my earnings.
But what I haven’t done is stay consistent with the actions that lead to income.
That is my #1 focus now, to quit being afraid and go make it happen.
Remember: You can’t save yourself to wealth… income is the most important piece of the pie.
Curious how your week is?
See you next week and as always…
Rooting for you 💪
